War is Hell

The War on Women has a new soldier...and this time, he's a Democrat. Representative Joe Salazar recently spoke against allowing people to carry guns on college campuses, using the (apparently false) danger of rape as a flashpoint:

"It's why we have call boxes, it's why we have safe zones, it's why we have the whistles. Because you just don't know who you're gonna be shooting at," Salazar remarked in the debate late Friday.

"And you don't know if you feel like you're gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone's been following you around or if you feel like you're in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop ... pop a round at somebody."

Uh, congressman, the term is actually "pop a cap in somebody," or more explicitly, "pop a cap in someone's ass." Get qualified, man!

Joe Salazar had to apologize for these remarks because some opportunistic Republicans accused him of being insensitive to the dangers women face. In a perfect world, he wouldn't have had to apologize---he's obviously not some sneaky plotting misogynist or anything. But he should be taken to task for the notion that "boxes" and "safe zones" and "whistles" are the end-all-be-all of rape prevention. I have no idea if guns on campuses are a good idea (I'm amenable to trying it out), but at least I don't have the hubris to imagine that rapists respect "safe zones." Come on.
